Nearpoint Lenses
NEARPOINT LENSES
You can call them learning lenses or you can call them stress relieving lenses. Others call them reading glasses. The names are different but they all do the same thing. By relieving stress while reading (or while doing other sustained nearpoint tasks) the patient is able to learn better and for longer periods of time.
Lenses may be low powered convex lenses or sometimes low powered yoked prisms. The lenses may be single vision (same prescription through out the lens) or in a bifocal form. The bifocal becomes necessary when the optimum prescription for nearpoint performance interferes with distance vision. In other words, the board becomes blurry. Most children won’t wear glasses that make things worse! The bifocal, then, is another tool to use to enhance performance.
NEARPOINT VISUAL STRESS
Many times it is possible to help my patients with their symptoms with only the use of these lenses. Other times the lenses are used in conjunction with an Optometric vision therapy program. This is determined at the time of the Optometric vision therapy evaluation.
